In 2021, the Department of Labor (DOL) issued guidance to support plan sponsors in addressing this issue. The guidance highlighted leading indicators that a plan might have a problem with lost or missing participants.


Fiduciary Training Missing ParticipantsA plan sponsor should work with their recordkeeper or third-party administrator (vendor) to understand their policies in determining if a participant is ‘lost or missing.’ If available, they should obtain a report of the specific plan’s participants identified as ‘lost or missing.’
