Understanding a 3(16) Fiduciary

A plan sponsor is an administrative fiduciary on a retirement plan as defined by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act’s (ERISA) section 3(16).

If a plan delegates administrative responsibilities to a 3(16) fiduciary service provider, the plan sponsor needs to fully understand what that service provider is and is not accepting fiduciary responsibility for completing.
